We’ll be updating this page from time to time with videos that Tony has shot ‘on the road’. These videos are either a bit long for a blog post or out of sequence with our regular posts.

Carraig Dúlra – Permaculture Part 1

When we arrived in Ireland we barely understood the concept of Organic Farming and certainly had no idea of what Permaculture was. We’ve enjoyed organic produce and meat and visited several organic farms in the past but nothing prepared us for the experience of working on an organic farm and practicing permaculture principals.

Within a few hours of our arrival in Wicklow County we were invited up to Carraig Dúlra for a BBQ and a chance to meet our hosts Michael and Suzie Cahn and their family. Carraig Dúlra is an organic small-holding run by Suzie and Mike just outside of the town of Wicklow, about 45 minutes South of Dublin.

We were WWOOFers (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) and we were volunteering at Carraig Dúlra for the month of July. Our first visit to the farm started with a tour of the gardens and an introduction to Permaculture. Here’s a video Tony shot of Suzie conducting the same tour a few weeks after our arrival:

Carraig Dúlra – Permaculture Part 2 – Forest Garden

A Permaculture Food Forest is similar to a natural forest in that plants grow at different levels: from ground cover to bushes to trees. Low lying shade tolerant plants such as perennial vegetables and herbs can thrive next to bushes of currants and berries all under a canopy of fruit trees.

In this video Suzie takes us on a tour of the Carraig Dúlra Forest Garden.

Carraig Dúlra – Permaculture Part 3 – Composting

In this video Suzie explains the importance of composting.

OOOOBY Box Scheme

Here’s a video Tony shot about ‘ooooby’ – “out of our own back yard” – a local food and community store featuring local, ethical and organic products. The store is located in Glenealy and is managed by Mike Cahn from Carraig Dúlra.
